Menorca Airport Guide

Menorca Mahon Airport is a modern two storey terminal building with two runways. It is situated approximately 5.4km to the south-west of the port and town of Mahon (Mao) at the end of a large natural (and pretty!) harbour which is the second largest natural deepwater harbour in the world.

It is a busy airport during the high season and in 2015 it handled 2.867.482 passengers with 28.687 flight operations. It is mainly a tourist airport with a huge number of charter flights during the high season months, July & August. Much of the traffic through the Menorca Airport is International, with Germany, Italy and the UK accounting for the majority of passengers. Arrivals are handled on the ground floor and departures are on floor 1.

Nationally, Madrid, Barcelona & Palma de Mallorca are the busiest airports in Spain. Over 60% of all passengers arriving at the airport are International with the remainding 40% being from traffic from the Balearic Islands.

Menorca is the 2nd biggest Balearic island, being smaller and altogether more relaxed than its neighbour Mallorca. It is only 48km from one end to the other and 21km wide so all the resorts are easily accessible and can easily be visited in a day trip. It's correct name in English is Minorca (small island) which lies next to " Majorca (big island) as they were named in Roman times. In Spanish it is written as Menorca.

There is a regular airport bus service which stops outside the arrivals hall to Mahon bus station where you can catch connections to other parts of the island.

There are also taxis for hire lined up outside the arrivals area. As a rough guide, a taxi into Mahon will cost around €12 and €60 to Ciutadella which is at the other end of the island. During the busy peak summer months you should prepared to wait in a queue for a while.

Usually taxi's on Menorca are licensed to only carry up to four passengers. Therefore if you are travelling in a large group it is a good idea book a private transfer in advance as they can supply vehicles of all sizes.

The best way to get around is to hire a car and you will see several car rental agencies lined up along the back wall of the arrivals area. If you book your car in advance you will often secure the best deal, cut down on time when you land and also ensure that you get the make and model of the vehicle you require with any extras (like child seats) fitted and ready and waiting for you.
