Lanzarote Arrecife Airport is the 9th busiest Spanish Airport. In 2015 it handled 6.124.321 passengers with 50.448 flight operations.
It is situated 9km to the west of Arrecife and 8km from Puerto del Carmen. Approximate journey times are Puerto del Carmen/20 minutes:Costa Teguise/15 minutes and Playa Blanca/45 minutes.
It is a very popular airport for holidaymakers with scheduled and chartered flights from all over Europe and other parts of Spain.
Lanzarote Airport has two terminal buildings with T1 spread over two floors and handling international flights. Departures on the Upper floor and Arrivals on the lower floor. The new terminal for national and inter-island flights is in the old terminal building which has been completely refurbished.
Surprisingly public bus services at the airport are a little limited and there is no shuttle bus transfer service to the main resorts. Your transport options to get to your final destination are a number of car hire firms in the arrivals area of the terminal building, plenty of taxis waiting on the rank outside, a private transfer or catching a bus into Arrecife. There are no train services on the Island.
The bus services are pretty regular and reliable to the main towns and resorts on the south coastline, but are less frequent if you want to travel inland. Taxis are are metered with tipping at your own discretion.
If you do hire a car then the places I would recommend you go to for the best views are the Timanfaya National Park, which covers around one quarter of Lanzarote's total surface. The scenery here is amazing with lava fields and burnt out volcanic peaks.
The view from the Mirador del Rio which is local artist César Manrique's creation right on the northern tip of the island is also quite breathtaking. It was a naval gun battery which was turned into a lookout point in the early 1970's offering spectacular views to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
