Valladolid is in the north west of Spain surrounded by some pretty spectacular and unspoilt scenery which includes three wine growing regions: making it a great place to visit if you want to sample some local wines. But the bad news is that the drink driving laws here are even stricter than the UK and it is very inadvisable to even think about having a drink if you have a vehicle with you! Police in Spain can issue some pretty hefty on the spot fines.
It you want to do some touring around then the only way to do it is by car as public transport here is very limited or non-existent. But don't think that because you are in a foreign country you are above the law as the car rental company will give your details to the police if you were not stopped for a a driving offence eg: a camera speed trap.
The power of the internet means that you can do most things without leaving your desk so that you can pre-book your rent a car very easily. And if you pìck up your hire car in Valladolid there is nothing to stop you dropping it off at another branch of the rent a car agency. For instance if you wanted to drive across the country to Madrid you will pass through Meseta plain surrounded by mountains as well as the the ancient kingdom of Leon and part of old kingdom of Castille.
And a few words of warning ... bear in mind that Spain is a country which attracts a great number of holidaymakers. Unfortunately this has opened the door for some unpleasant opportunists and you might be watched when collecting the car by some unscrupulous people who will seize the opportunity (literally) to grab your passports and holiday euros.
Never leave the car doors open when you to to pay for petrol or other goods and never trust anyone who stops you to say you have a flat tyre or who runs into you. They may have done this to steal from you: and do not be fooled as one of them is always very helpful and apologetic while the other sneaks behind and robs you.
