Located on the north shoreline of the Mar Menor close to the town of San Javier, is Murcia-San Javier Airport. This is about 44km (about 40 minutes drive) from Murcia city centre. Should you decide to hire a car, the motorway connections are really good for getting to destinations along Southern end of the Costa Blanca and the Costa Calida between: Cartagena, Murcia, and Torrevieja. It is also just a 30km drive from La Manga.
There is no train service at the airport but you can catch a bus to Santiago de la Ribera where can link up with other lines to Cartagena, Murcia, Campoamor and Alicante. Line 73 is operated by local Latbus and the journey time is 45 minutes with single tickets costing €7.00, but be warned it only operates twice a day at 16:30 and 18:45.
There is a taxi rank outside the arrivals hall with a ride (for up to 4 people) into Murcia costing approximately €55 and €45 to La Manga Club. There are supplements of €3.10 for pick-up at the airport and €0.35 for suitcases and pieces of luggage. All taxis are metered, but still ask for a quote before you set off.
In 2015 Murcia Airport handled 1.067.576 passengers with 8.546 flight operations. There is going to be a new airport in nearby Corvera which is in the process of being built and due for completion some in the Summer 2013 (but this date keeps being put back).
When Corvera Airport does open all the passenger traffic from Murcia San Javier Airport will operate from there and Murcia will revert back to being a military aircrart base.
