if you are hiring a car then driving directions to and from Madrid Airport are fairly straightforward as it has good road links with the main access and ring roads of the city.
The airport is only 12km from the city centre and you can get to it in various ways: from the city centre and M-30 on the A-2 or N-II (road to Barcelona) take the exit towards the airport at kilometre 12 or from the M-40 exits 3 and 9 connecting respectively with the M-11 and N-100 which lead directly to the airport terminals
The traffic system in Madrid is pretty complicated and takes some getting used to, with congestion being a major problem on access roads especially during rush hours and holiday periods. So our advice is to find a safe place when you arrive, leave your car there, and use the public transport system. Your hire car is better used for trips outside the city centre.
Parking can be difficult with resident only areas allowing you to leave you car there for just 90 minutes from 08.00 to 21.00. The parking areas are identified by a blue line on the street and discs can be obtained from hotels and travel agents. Sometimes they are not very clearly marked so always check for signs.
Also make sure that you don't leave anything of value in your parked car and put anything you do have to leave out of sight. Parking garages are limited but are a safer alternative than the street but check the prices before you enter as they can be very expensive.
As a general guide to driving in Spain always give way to traffic coming from the left, particularly at roundabouts. You must use your indicators when overtaking, pulling out and pulling back in again. Surprisingly it is illegal to use your horn in built-up areas except in cases of extreme danger - this is a case of don't do as the Spanish do but do as they say!
