Do not worry about driving a hire car on the island of La Palma as the main roads are generally well maintained asphalt . But there are not many straight, flat stretches of road as they often follow the contours of the mountains and are therefore quite steep with bends but there are barriers at the side of the road.
Most roads in and around the villages are also in good condition. but the smaller roads are often dirt tracks that are best covered in a jeep. It's not a good idea to use your rent a car as it could well get damaged.
If you travel along the Old Road starting at the look out post above El Paso and travel over the central ridge of the island down to San Idrio, Brena Baja it will take you through an amazing variety of landscape in a very short time.
Be careful when parking and never leave your car on a straight white or yellow line as the police will issue you with a Multas parking violation ticket and fine. Park only in the areas with a blue line which offer one hour of parking free of charge. And don't forget to place your parking disc or a sheet of paper with your time of arrival behind the window.
Because island is just 30km wide and less than 50km long you can easily visit all of the main tourist areas within a day by car.
