There is a good selection of companies to choose from when booking car hire but only five have their offices within the terminal building. Las Palmas Airport in Gran Canaria is about 22kms from the capital in the south of the island, so if you want to explore this beautiful tropical paradise it is well worth hiring a car.
One of my favourite areas on the island is the cumbres mountainous centre. It is an area of pine forests and volcanic mountains. To get to the top with its fantastic views drive through Fataga, Arguiniguin or Mogan which all have places where you can stop to sample some local food and wine. On the way down head down towards the north coast through the green part of the island and Las Palmas.
To give you some idea of driving distances from to the most popular resorts ...

Gran Canaria has good transport links with roads going right round the island and up into the mountains. The motorways first opened in and around Las Palmas and then went up on to the north coast and the airport. As tourism increased then roads were built along the south coast.
The main motorways are the GC1/GC2 and GC31 with the GC4 and GC5 main dual carriageways . The sparsely populated western and the northwestern parts of the island are only linked to main roads.
