Fuerteventura is a great island to explore, and the best way to really see it is by having your own transport. Because of this there are a large number of car hire companies but if you want to rent a car on arrival only five are based within the main airport terminal itself. You willsee their offices along the back wall in the arrivals area.

Once you've got your hire car it's very easy to get out of the airport by following the FV-2 road which takes you on to the coastline.

Driving in Fuerteventura is on the right-hand side of the road and the national speed limit is 90 km per hour.

The roads are well maintained and reasonably quiet here with the flat easy to dirve East Coast and West Coast roads winding up higher and higher to offer some great panoramic views.

Driving is relatively easy in Fuerteventura as the island has long clear stretches of well maintained main roads which are well signposted (quite a rarity in Spain!). There are also a lot less vehicles than back in the UK.

My advice is that if you're driving don't risk even one drink as the limits on drink-driving are lower here than the UK. (0.8. v 0.5). If you passed your test less than a year ago it's only 0.1

As a general rule it is worth remembering that you cannot park next to curb that has been painted yellow or where there is a no parking sign displayed. In the major cities and popular resorts finding on-street parking that is not metered or permit parking can be very difficult.

Parking spaces that are marked in blue generally indicate that you should purchase a ticket either from a nearby machine or an attendant. These usually have a maximum stay time of two hours which you should make sure of as parking penalties can be heavy. Those who decide to park illegally may well end up becoming acquainted with the 'grua', which is Spanish for the tow truck.
