It is certainly worth renting a car as although the airport it is only 12km from the city centre the area has good motorway links with northern Spain: The west of the A-8 leads to Santander and San Sebastian and the French border in the east. The AP-68 takes you to Bilbao and the cities of Vitoria, Logroño, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Burgos and Madrid.
Whether you rent a car or drive or your own vehicle in Spain remember to carry your driving licence at all times well as a certificate of insurance and car rental/ownership ownership documents. You may be fined if you are stopped by the police and fail to present these documents (taking them into the police station the following day is not acceptable here).
If you need to fill up your hire car the airport has a petrol service station in its industrial area which is very close to the road you use when leaving the airport. The station offers a carwash and has a self-service shop and a restaurant.
Because Bilbao is a large and busy city which runs along the river to actual drive in the centre is not always easy. The main streets are Gran Via (shopping area): Avenida de Sabino Arana: La Alameda de Recalde: la Alameda de Urquijo and Avenida Autonomía.
The four main ways of getting into Bilbao are the AP8 from Irun in one direction and the other way to Santander : the AP68 from Vitoria and Madrid or from Burgos A636. When you are trying find the Old Town, various museums, a multitude of shops, the main football stadium or the reknowned Opera House you should take Bilbao (west) Oeste exit.
To get to other areas including Barakaldo, Sestao, the Bilbao BEC Exhibition Centre , suspension bridge or large shopping area you should to carry on along the bypass.
